Background: Prostaglandin D synthase catalyzes the isomerization of prostaglandin H2 to prostaglandin D2 (PGD2). PGD2 functions as a neuromodulator as well as a trophic factor in the central nervous system. PGD2 is also involved in smooth muscle contraction/relaxation and is a potent inhibitor of platelet aggregation. Two distinct types of prostaglandin D synthase have been identified, namely the lipocalin type enzyme (b trace) and the hematopoietic enzyme. Lipocalin type prostaglandin D synthase is localized in the central nervous system and male genital organs of various mammals and the human heart whereas the hematopoietic prostaglandin D synthase is widely distributed in the peripheral tissues and localized in the antigen presenting cells, mast cells, and megakaryocytes. The lipocalin type prostaglandin D synthase (L-PGDS) has been identified as b trace, which is a major protein in human cerebrospinal fluid.
