Background: Matrix Metalloproteinase 23 was first described in tumor cells. MMP23 shares much of the same domain structure as the classical MMPs, but has a unique cysteine array. The cysteine switch that is found in the classical MMPs is lacking or has a different sequence in MMP23. MMP23 has a furin cleavage site and it is thought to be localized within the cell. MMP23 has been reported as splice variants with different truncations at its C-terminus. MMP23 is predominantly expressed in ovary, testis, and prostate indicating that it plays a specialized role in reproductive processes.
