Background: Cell adhesion molecules are a family of closely related cell surface glycoprotein involved in cell-cell interactions during growth and are thought to play an important role in embryogenesis and development. Multiple isoforms of Neuronal cell adhesion molecule (NCAM) have been reported in both mouse and human brain tissue. L1CAM/CD171 (L1 cell adhesion molecule) plays an important role in nervous system development, including axon guidance, neuronal migration and differentiation. The presence of L1CAM might contribute to tumor progression by promoting cell adhesion and migration and is known to be expressed by neurons, neuroblastomas and other malignant tumors.
