Background: SOX 3 is also known as SRY related HMG BOX gene 3. All SOX proteins have a single HMG box. Humans with mutations in SOX3 have panhypopituitarism. Conditional disruption of SOX3 in mice demonstrates that anterior pituitary development depends on SOX3 expression in the overlying neural ectoderm.
